DVD Review: 17 Again

Zac Efron is a multi-talented young male star right out of the Disney cookie cutter mold. Tremendously lovable to young girls and quirkily hot to their Cougar moms at the same time, what kind of role would be perfect as young Mr. Efron’s first starring vehicle?

Even after showing his chops in the “High School Musical Trilogy” and showing he has true acting ability in a supporting role in “Hairspray”, it seems that a movie that would show off his naked abs, perfectly sculpted torso and arms, plus his perfectly coiffed hair would be the most fitting. After watching “17 Again” the answer is split between yes and no.

“17 Again” should actually be called “17 Again and again and again and again” for the amount of times this overused plot has seen the light of day. Through literature, cinema, and television, “17 Again” merely rehashes the age old premise of, “What would happen if I had the chance to do it all again?”

Matthew Perry plays the older version of Mike 20 years after an out of this world high school experience that only Hollywood can provide. The once “King Mike” has his world and future outlook forever put on a different path in 1989 after the revelation of the pregnancy of his girlfriend right before the championship basketball game. While doing the “right thing”, Mike marries his high school sweetheart but his life is “unfinished” and he never truly reaches the heights in life he or anyone else expected. His wife wants a divorce, his kids hate him, and he has no idea who his son is. What way is there to go but back?

Magically, in Capraesque-fashion he is transformed back to a 17 year old, re-enrolls in high school with the help of his now rich formerly geek friend from high school. Lessons are learned, awkwardness is revisited, and Efron even gets to experience a weird “Marty McFly” moment with his on screen daughter.

Even with its drawbacks and look of originality, “17 Again” still works for a family DVD night on a rainy summer night and earns 3 out of 5 lockers.
