The Secret Between Us by Barbara Delinsky |
| |
Bestselling author Barbara Delinsky’s novel from 2008, The Secret Between Us, is available in a new paperback mass market edition. The Secret Between Us (Anchor, 2009) captures the trials and tribulations of a family caught in the middle of a crisis and the personal struggles they must overcome in order to keep from falling apart.
Deborah Monroe and her daughter are involved in an accident one dark and rainy night. The aftermath threatens to irrevocably harm Deborah’s family, which was already on shaky ground. She makes a split-second decision that will alter the course of events and unknowingly drive a wedge in her relationships.
Three years ago Deborah’s mother passed away. Her father, Michael, still hasn’t recovered from his loss and Deborah has silently noted the danger he poses to himself and their shared medical practice. Not long after the death of Deborah’s mother, her husband Greg left her and the kids to set up a new life in Vermont without them. Then they were faced with the heart wrenching diagnosis of their son with a degenerative eye disorder. Deborah’s anger at Greg only grew stronger that he left them and was no longer present in their lives while she picks up the pieces of her children’s shattered emotions.
Deborah’s been the strong one in everything that has happened the past few years and sees the only way to handle this latest problem is by herself. With the medical practice in jeopardy as well, whether by legal charges or small town rumors chipping away at her and her father’s reputations, she believes only she can fix it all.
The Secret Between Us centers around a single event but ties in the past of each character, from Deborah and her family and the those closely associated with them to the other victims of the accident. Delinsky’s ability to use both depth and brevity to tie in back stories keeps the reader’s attention while providing them with the necessary details to understand the thoughts and actions of the characters.
Delinsky has the ability to create a story with characters that are real and relatable making for an enjoyable, straight forward read.
