New Movie Review - Whip It

Ever feel like you are stuck in a rut? Do you feel like other people are making your decisions for you? Are you underappreciated or misunderstood? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you will love the new movie Whip It.

Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) is sick of the small town life in Bodeen, Texas. She competes in beauty pageants and works at the Oink Joint to make to her mother, Brooke (Marcia Gay Harden) happy, but longs for something bigger. One day, while out shopping, a few local roller derby girls come in and drop off a flyer for an exhibition in Austin. Bliss and her best friend, Pash (Alia Shawkat), secretly attend the exhibition and Biiss becomes captivated by the energy that her life currently lacks.

While there, she befriends a member of the Hurl Scouts named Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig), who tells her to come to tryouts. At tryouts, Bliss impresses the Hurl Scouts coach, Razor (Andrew Wilson), and becomes their new jammer. Despite never winning a match, the team has a loyal following and Bliss quickly becomes the sports poster child, much to the dismay of Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis), their rival’s jammer.

This movie will touch the underdog in each of us. Director Drew Berrymore delivers the right amount of comedy and derby action. Despite there being a little too much romance, thrown in, it still shines on the silver screen. The acting is top notch and you get the sense that the actors had fun making this film. You also get an in-depth look into the world of roller derby and the bond between the team. After seeing this film, you will want to go out and find something you are just as passionate about.

In the words of Razor… Go Get Some!
