Settlement Music School Scholarship Students Featured in Free Concert, March 10, 2010

Settlement Music School will present a free concert of its Advanced Study Ensemble students from eight different string, woodwind and piano ensembles on Sunday, March 7, 7pm in the PNC*Presser Recital Hall, Mary Louise Curtis branch, 416 Queen Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147. The concert is free and open to the public.

Selected by audition each year, students receive individual instruction with a senior teacher, chamber music coaching, music theory and ear training classes. They perform throughout the season in school and community concerts and special events. Currently, there are eight funded Advanced Study Ensembles (see program below). Each will perform at this concert.

Settlement Music School has a history of offering advanced training to aspiring young musicians. In its earliest years, Settlement organized a Conservatory Division that dealt specifically with career-minded students. That program produced notable students in the 1920's and formed the basis on which the Curtis Institute was founded in 1924 at Settlement by Mary Louise Curtis.

Even after Curtis was established, Settlement continued to develop youngsters in need of advanced training and frequently acted as a preparatory program for students who went on to leading conservatories around the country. Current members of the Philadelphia Orchestra such as Renard Edwards (viola), Mark Gigliotti (bassoon), Richard Amoroso and Booker Rowe (violin), and Peter Smith (oboe) participated in Settlement's Ensemble program. Also, Joe Anderer, (French horn) of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; Judith LeClair (bassoon) of the New York Philharmonic and Ann Hobson Pilot (harp) of the Boston Symphony were among the students who participated.

Settlement Music School is the largest community-based school of the arts in the United States, serving 15,000 students each year at six branches in two states. It provides people of all abilities, age, race and financial means with programs of the highest quality in music and dance to help them achieve their greatest potential. Settlement awards nearly $2 million a year in financial aid. It is the largest employer of musicians in the region, with up to 250 dedicated faculty members, most of whom have advanced degrees.
