June 6th - The Afro-Brazilian sounds of SambaDá with The Pagode Project:
SambaDá can be described as a hybrid of musical sounds informed by bloco afro (Afro-Brazilian percussion music), samba-reggae, surf-rock, and California funk. The Pagode Project is a Philadelphia-based experimental music project fusing the styles and rhythms of Pagode, Samba, Jazz, Funk, and other Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian influences. http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=3575&c=60&pg=
June 20th - Aboriginal guitarist and vocalist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (formerly of Yothu Yindi):
North Australian native, blind from birth, grew up as a member of the Gumatj clan on Elcho Island, off the coast of tropical North East Arnhem Land. In his culture, the elders are the spokespersons for the clan. But the self-effacing Gurrumul, as he likes to be known, doesn't have to say anything at all; the songs on his self-titled debut speak volumes. His compositions are simple in approach yet eloquent in effect, sparingly arranged with overdubbed vocal harmonies, acoustic guitar and double bass. http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=3551&c=60&pg=
June 29th - Toubab Krewe with Grimace Federation blending West African and American influences: http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=3584&c=60&pg=
July 3rd – Celebrate the holiday weekend with the Afro-Cuban All Stars (featuring members of the Buena Vista Social Club):
Juan de Marcos González is one of the most important figures in Cuban music today. He has a mission to show the world the wealth, diversity and vitality of Cuban music. González and Nick Gold planned to record two albums in Havanas EGREM studios in 1997: the debut from the All Stars and a collaboration between West African and Eastern Cuban musicians for which Gold had invited Ry Cooder as producer. Due to passport complications the African musicians were unable to travel to the recording. However, the two week recording trip yielded an extraordinary trio of albums: The debut albums from the AFRO-CUBAN ALL STARS A Toda Cuba le Gusta and RUBEN GONZALEZ Introducing and the BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB - Albums which have changed the music industry in Cuba. http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=3576&c=60&pg=
July 21st – Pitchfork darlings Konono No. 1:
Konono N°1 was founded over 25 years ago by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembé (a traditional instrument sometimes called "sanza" or "thumb piano", consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band's line-up includes three electric likembés (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. There's also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring these famous megaphones. http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=1659&c=60&pg=
July 23rd – new-wave Salsa pioneers Bio Ritmo:
Bio Ritmo is recognized around the globe as a leader in the "new 'old school' Salsa movement and considered by many as one of the "few pioneers and the most innovative [Salsa] band out there" (Aguzate.org, Chicago). With the return of creative director Rei Alvarez in 2003 and after a four-year recording hiatus, Bio Ritmo self-released their award winning eponymous CD, which included hit songs "Hermano" and "Atrevete". http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=3535&c=60&pg=
July 27th – Bohemian cabaret ensemble Vagabond Opera:
Bohemian Cabaret ensemble Vagabond Opera is described by the Washington Post as “A band of ceaseless charisma, boundless energy, impeccable musicianship and more than a little touch of both the naughty and exotic.” The group delivers passionate offerings of Bohemian cabaret for young and old. Paris hot jazz, gut bucket swing, tangos, Ukrainian folk-punk ballads, klezmer and vigorous originals meet a world of riverboat gambling queens, Turkish belly dancers, and the enigmatic Marlene Dietrich. http://tickets.worldcafelive.com/eventperformances.asp?evt=3548&c=60&pg=
July 30th – Portuguese songstress Ramana Vieira and IMA featuring Rosemary Ostrowski
Her extraordinary gift of bringing this 15th century style into modern times is her unique trademark. Often referred to as the “New Voice of Portuguese World Music,” this powerful vocalist is making her mark as one of the premier contemporary Fado artists.
According to the Portuguese, Fado is a melancholy and often-mournful music similar to the American blues as it tells stories of heartache and disappointment. The essence of the poetry is the quality of “saudade,” a word that is difficult to translate as it expresses a myriad of feelings.
August 12th – Russian rockers Mumiy Troll
What do they sound like? Consider the term – ROCKAPOPS. Contemporary Russian music is actually divided into what was before and what came after Mumiy Troll. Band founder, frontman Ilya Lagutenko, defined their music style as "rockapops" just to avoid pointless Russian media debates on the definition of what is rock and what is pop. Mumiy Troll became the leader of an entire new musical trend, copied now to greater or lesser degree by Russian wannabees and mainstream artists
