Vandana Shiva free talk July 14 |
| |
World-renowned environmental activist, passionate
eco-feminist and noted author Dr. Vandana Shiva will give a free public
talk at the Academy of Natural Sciences on Wednesday, July 14.
Shiva, based in Delhi, India, was named an “environmental
hero” by Time Magazine in 2003, and is the recipient of many awards
for her work focusing on the connections between poverty,
sustainability, agriculture and human rights. Her talk will focus on the
need to apply democratic principles to solving problems involving the
environment and the economy, a concept dubbed “earth democracy.”
"We need a change in paradigm,” Shiva has said. “Earth
Democracy protects the ecological processes that maintain life and the
fundamental human rights, including the right to water, the right to
food, the right to health, the right to education, and the right to jobs
and livelihoods.”
Shiva is the author of many books and more than 300 scholarly
papers. Her recent publications include Globalization's New Wars: Seed,
Water and Life Forms, Earth Democracy, Justice, Sustainability and
Peace, and Soil Not Oil. Among her many awards, Shiva has received the
Sydney Peace Prize, the Global 500 Award of the United Nations and the
Right Livelihood Award (the “Alternative Nobel Prize”). She serves
on the boards of many organizations including the International Forum on
Globalization and the World Future Council.
Shiva’s visit is presented by the Academy’s Center for
Environmental Policy, whose goal is to inform and engage various
constituents, promote solutions, and build public and professional
awareness on important environmental topics.
The event is free and open to the public. The program will begin
at 6 p.m. with a reception, followed by the talk at 6:30 p.m.
Reservations are required and seating is limited. Register at:

by Sisters of Earth, the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable
