EnterActive Arts Concert |
| |
The EnterActive Arts Concert will be held on the new RiverStage at the Great Plaza on Saturday, July 24, 2010 from 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia’s premier waterfront entertainment destination.
The EnterActive Arts Concert is a program of “performance workshops” that will culminate with a “Master Class” performance. Audience members will watch and participate in dynamic, interactive performance workshops lead by Teaching Artists from various performing arts organizations throughout Philadelphia. Teaching Artists will give performance lessons that demonstrate music theory and composition, orchestral conducting, poetry and lyric writing, and dance. The audience will see all of the lessons learned from the performance workshops in action when they are applied during the final, amazing audio/visual “Master Class” performance.
This free event will be “exciting education” -- children and adults will have the opportunity to learn more about the music they hear with a different ear and a heightened awareness of the art and academics involved in the composition and performance of music.
DRWC is pleased to have the participation of the following organizations who have committed their talent, input, and passion for the arts to make this concert a true special event.
Headlining this event will be the Black Pearl Orchestra, a true gem of the Delaware Valley. Founded in 2008 by renowned conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson, the ensemble is made up of talented musicians selected from the best music conservatories across the country. Using the diverse capabilities of its members, The Black Pearl Orchestra creates unique compositions that unite classical music with literature, visual arts, and the media. Thanks to their hands-on engagement activities, their audiences have the chance to truly experience music.
Upon taking the stage, Jeri Lynne Johnson will teach the audience about orchestral conducting, music theory, and composition. Following the workshop, the Black Pearl Orchestra will perform a selection of classical music. After the performance, select audience members will be invited on stage to conduct the musicians.
The orchestra will close with a Master Class Jam Session featuring the Jazzyfatnastees. The Jazzyfatnastees are comprised of eclectic artists Tracey Moore and Mercedes Martinez. In 1998, the duo moved from Los Angeles to Philadelphia and signed with Motive Records. They released their debut Album, The Once and Future, in 1999. Since then, these girls of groove co-founded Black Lily, Inc., a corporation which promotes aspiring female artists through film and music festivals. Their latest album, The Tortoise & the Hare, was released in 2002 through Coolhunter/Ryko distribution. The duo continues to work on their unique sound, while shining a light on artists forced into the dark by mainstream music.
First to take the stage will be members of Artists and Musicians of Latin America (AMLA). Audience members will be treated to a musical performance by members of the AMLA and a fiery dance performance by Grupo Fuego. The AMLA is an organization founded primarily to service the Latin Community in Philadelphia, but is open to all those who support Latin music and culture.
AMLA has partnered with Esperanza, a Latin agency based in the Hunting Park community of Philadelphia. Empowered by faith, Esperanza assists in developing Latin communities around the world. According to the partnerships’ members, “AMLA offers its arts expertise to enrich Esperanza’s academic offerings, while Esperanza’s experience as a capacity builder and community developer strengthen AMLA’s operations and future.” AMLA aims to educate the community about Latin music, culture, and dance; therefore forming a bond amidst Philadelphia’s ethnic communities.
Following the performances, audience members who have caught the Latin fever will be invited on stage to sing and dance.
Then Warren Oree & the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble will conduct an upbeat Jazz theory and composition workshop, as well as a musical performance. Afterwards, select audience members will get the chance to perform an impromptu piece with the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble representing Lifeline Music Coalition, Inc.
In November 2003, Warren Oree and Graziella D’Amelio co-founded the Lifeline Music Coalition. The mission of this non-profit corporation is to promote the importance of jazz music in Philadelphia, and to educate the Philadelphia community about the presence of Philadelphia musicians in all genres of art.
Warren Oree & the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble have performed their versatile jazz music both nationally and internationally. Its members include Warren Oree, Umar Raheem, Greg “Ju-Ju” Jones, Doug “Pablow” Edwards, and Frank Butrey.
Preceding the main act, guitarist Monette Sudler will encourage audience members to embrace creativity with a creative writing and music improvisation workshop. Monette will be representing Art Sanctuary, which was founded in 1998 by respected author and senior lecturer Lorene Cary. Rooted in North Philadelphia, Art Sanctuary pays tribute to African-American art and welcomes acclaimed and aspiring artists to help create educational programs and performances for the people of Philadelphia. The organization’s home, The Church of the Advocate, is a National Historic Landmark Building. Lorene Cary proclaims that, “Art Sanctuary has been made possible by the church’s generous sharing of its building, a six-story French Gothic Cathedral hung with spectacular murals of black history and struggle.”
Spoken Word Artists will perform, accompanied by improvisational musical compositions. Pre-registered audience members will then express their own works, and/or poetry written by other artists that inspire them.
Public Programming at Penn's Landing would not be possible without the continued support of corporate partners such as PECO, Verizon, Pennsylvania Lottery, Live Nation, the Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Company and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, all of whom are committed to serving the Greater Philadelphia community.
The 2010 Summer Program of Free Events at Penn’s Landing is funded and produced by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC). All events produced by DRWC are FREE to the public on the new RiverStage on the Great Plaza, the heart of Penn's Landing, Philadelphia’s premier Delaware River waterfront entertainment destination.
The DRWC is a nonprofit corporation created in January 2009, exclusively for the benefit of the City of Philadelphia and its citizens. The fundamental purpose of DRWC is to design, develop and manage the central Delaware River waterfront in Philadelphia. DRWC intends to transform the waterfront into a vibrant destination location for recreational, cultural, and commercial activities for the residents and visitors of Philadelphia.
